1698. (document) U.S. Light-House Establishment, Keeper Pay Voucher Form No. 5, Keeper Margaret Anderson, Round Island Lighthouse, Mississippi c.1877. This is a very scarce original pay voucher for Keeper Margaret Anderson (Keeper 1872-1881) at Round Island Lighthouse in Mississippi. Margaret Anderson who took over as head keeper in 1872 after her husband drowned during a hurricane in 1872. She kept the light until 1881 when she died and was succeeded by her daughter Mary Anderson for just a year. This document is signed twice by her as well as by U.S. Naval Commander C. M. Schoonmaker. Round Island Lighthouse Mississippi was first built in 1833. By 1854 the sea had eroded the shore near the tower. As a result a new tower situated further from the water was completed in 1859. During the Civil War like the light was darkened. It remained in service until 1944. This original pay voucher was filled out by Margaret Anderson and signed in hand by her, receiving the amount of $150 in pay for the three month period ending December 31, 1877. Document measures 6 ½” x 8 ¼” and is overall clean with one original fold, hand punched. Superb piece of this rare woman keeper and light station, would make an exceptional addition to any collection or display. 6 ½” x 8 ½”. (VG+). $96.
