Grading:
AS NEW or MINT (M): The book must appear as if it had just come off the end of the bindery, with absolutely no defects whatsoever. The dust jacket, if issued with one, will be crisp and colors bright. The term AS NEW is preferred, but MINT is used by many dealers.
FINE (F): While the book itself is not the pristine AS NEW condition, it must be close, with no defects. Any minor defects such as small tears or rubbing to the dust jacket must be noted.
VERY GOOD (VG): Book is used and shows some wear, but doesn’t have any pages torn, although there will be some tears on the binding or dust jacket.
GOOD (G): The average used book. All its pages are intact, any defects must be described.
FAIR (FR): Book is worn, but it has all its pages. If the endpapers and half-title pages are missing, it should be so noted. All defects must be described.
POOR: A book that is good for reading or research only, due to the fact some pages are soiled, scuffed, or stained; and it might also have a loose binding and pages. However, the rest must be complete.
EX-LIBRARY: Any copies in this category must be described as such, regardless of condition.
BOOK CLUB: As with the above, these editions must also be described as such, regardless of their overall condition.
