THE FLOATING LIGHT OF THE GOODWIN SANDS . A Tale.

8308d. Ballantyne, R. M. THE FLOATING LIGHT OF THE GOODWIN SANDS . A Tale. Philadelphia . nd. c.1870. 403p. Nice, brightly embossed binding. In this exceptionally scarce title, the author gives an insight into the condition, value, and vicissitudes of the light-vessels, or floating lighthouses, which guard the shores of the United Kingdom . A very detailed account, particularly of the life and adventures of some of the men who have manned these interesting craft in the past. Based on the author’s visit to the floating light Gull, told through the use of a fictional tale combined with the correct accounts of the life at sea. Unusually clean, bright and tight. With 1 fine woodcut illustration of mast lanterns. Exceptionally scarce, only the fourth copy that I have been able to find. In wonderful condition. (VG+). $98.
