Thomas Taylor’s new book, Monhegan Island and Its Lighthouse, brings to life the history of this unique coastal island of Maine from the times of early exploration and ties this in to the history of its picturesque lighthouse, which was first built in 1824. Includes an overall history of the island and its people leading into the need and construction of the first lighthouse in 1824. Then the author details the reconstruction of the light station as well as the fog signal station on nearby Manana Island. Also includes excellent sections on the technical changes in the lighthouse and evolving life on the island, as well as the changes in the station brought about by the evolution of the Coast Guard and then World War II.
