3012. (stereoview) U.S. Life-Saving Station and Lighthouse, Watch Hill, Rhode Island c.1876. Running far out into the ocean is Watch Hill, which has been the scene of many dreadful disasters. The elevation of Watch Hill made it a grand lookout point, and in 1806 a lighthouse was constructed at the point, seen here. In 1850 one of the first 28 life-saving stations in the country was erected just behind the lighthouse. In 1879, the early life-saving station was replaced by an 1876-design, seen here, dating this view to just after 1876. View is clear, images clean on stained early tan mount. No photographer noted. Rare view. (G+). 110.
