27474. (souvenir dish) Harbor Lighthouse, Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. c.1900. Lovely scalloped edge dish features a bright, full color image of the pier-head keeper’s house with the lantern room on the roof. A two-story house with a lantern on the roof was built on wooden piles in 1828 for about $4,000, which showed a fixed white light visible for 14 miles. In 1847, a new stone breakwater was built for $4700, replacing the old wooden one and a fourth-order Fresnel lens replaced the old lamps and reflectors in 1856. The dwelling and walkway were repaired many times through the years. The hurricane of September 21, 1938, pretty much finished off the old building. The Coast Guard took over the Lighthouse Service in 1939, and they quickly demolished the dilapidated structure. Dish is bright, a charming piece for your collection, enhanced with a gilded rim. Marked “Made in Germany for Jernigan & Huxford, Edgartown, Mass.” (VG+). $295.
