12222. (promotional brochure) Wyer’s Art Store, Federal Street, Nantucket c.1898. Henry S. Wyer, born on Nantucket in 1847, was one of the century’s “big three” photographers. He worked initially on the mainland, and in 1880 he had a studio in Yonkers, New York. But his interest in Nantucket would guide his career and in 1881 he began his work of photographing the streets, houses, and waterfront of his island home. Wyer was an artist and a writer, as well as photographer. He was one of the founders of the Nantucket Historical Association in 1894. His little shop on Federal Street – Wyer’s Art Store – as well as his shop in ‘Sconset brought him in association with artists, musicians and and writers, and his writings and excellent photography would continue until his death in 1920 at age 73. This wonderful little brochure by Wyer for his Art Store, measures 5 ½” x 6 ½” and features a full cover photographic image of “an ocean symphony”. Inside he describes the many wares available at his store including water colors, souvenir spoons, Nantucket photo views, photographic calendars, statuary by Da Prato, fancy goods, St. Regis Indian Baskets, Wedgewood, driftwood from old ships, and much more. Fine little piece for display, quite rare. Only very light age toning and a bit of edge wear. (VG+). $34.
