1361. (photo) Gay Head Life Saving Station, Martha’s Vineyard c.1915. Rare view from Gay Head Light Station of the only United States Life Saving Station located on Martha’s Vineyard. The Gay Head Life-Saving station was located just east of the lighthouse at Gay Head. The station had a rich heritage dating from the days of the Wampanoag Indian surfmen and the Massachusetts Humane Society. The station was built in 1895 and was the only station in the country of that (“Gay Head”) design by George R. Tolman. Perched high above the ocean on a cliff, the structure appeared as one of the most striking Shingle Style stations built by the Life-Saving Service. For some reason, very few photos of this station were taken. Clear though distant image measures 3 ½” x 5 ½” on postcard paper. (VG+). $26.
