18127. (negative) Point Gammon Lighthouse, Cape Cod c.1953. The Point Gammon Light was one of the earlier lighthouses in this area, erected in 1816 to mark what is now Great Island on southern Cape Cod. The light was erected just east of the entrance to Lewis Bay and Hyannis Harbor, and a little over two miles north of the dangerous ledges known as Bishops and Clerks. The tower and dwelling were built of whitewashed fieldstone and by the 1850s boasted 11 lamps with 14-inch reflectors, showing a fixed white light. The light was discontinued shortly after 1858, but the stone tower remains today on private property. Because the light is in a gated community, it is very difficult to view, the only way being by boat traveling around the point. The negative measures 2 ¼” and was taken in January 1953. The image is extremely clear and will make a great print. (F-). $26
