14185. (mounted photo) U.S. Life-Saving Service Surfmen on the Beach, Wallis Sands, NH c.1898. Rare early mounted photo measures 8” x 10” overall and shows two surfmen on beach patrol meeting on the beach. Each carries a Coston flare handle on a lanyard around his neck, and a Dietz patrol lantern. On their slicker hats is marked “L.S.S. Wallis Sands”. Photo is labeled in pencil “Wallis Sands L.S.S. Winter 1898-1899. C.F. Marden at right.” Photo is clear and close, moderate soiling, a few marks, one mat corner chipped, others bent. Extremely rare close view. (VG-). $265.
