17109. (lot) Vintage Wool School Sweater U.S. Coast Guard Academy With 2 Academy Yearbooks c.1943.
17109. (lot) Vintage Wool School Sweater U.S. Coast Guard Academy With 2 Academy Yearbooks c.1943. Extremely rare U.S. Coast Guard Academy upperclassman’s sweater dates from c.1954. Rare sweater is in very good condition and includes Coast Guard logo on the front, leather patches on the sleeves, and great “rope knot” buttons. The owner’s name “Kevin L. Moser” is stitched inside. Also included are two Academy yearbooks “Tide Rips”, 1945 and 1946 which include Moser’s photo. Captain Kevin Leo Moser was born August 9, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1946. In addition to his studies, he boxed and played the bagpipes (the Academy required him to practice in the bathroom). One of his first assignments was to Operation Crossroads, where he participated in monitoring and cleanup after the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests. He subsequently served all over the world, his last tour at sea being as the first CO of the USCGC Gallatin (1969-1971). His last few years of service were spent in Washington D.C., working on port security. Moser served in the Coast Guard until 1975, retiring with the rank of Captain. Purchased at the estate sale of the retired US Coast Guard Captain, this was hanging in the closet. There is some light wear and a few very small pulls or mothing, also some dark or lightly stained areas. The maker’s tag is worn away but sweater appears to be of wool, possibly a large in size. Sweater measures approx. 27″ top of collar to bottom edge, 21″ across the shoulders, 21″ sleeves. This is an extremely rare early Coast Guard momento, great for the collector or past Academy graduate. (VG+). $425.
