1897. (lot documents 70+ pieces) Keeper John A. Brown, Sakonnet Light Station in Rhode Island and Tarrytown Light in New York c.1913 – 1930’s. This collection is a very detailed, meticulous, chronological compilation of a career Keeper in the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Probably a later descendant of the Keeper’s family made this binder of his career – likely the Keeper saved a great many of the important documents that he received or sent throughout his career. There are over 70 pieces in the collection including over 50 documents, a WWI Victory Medal and ribbon, about 16 original photographs, Keeper’s Annual Property Return (Tarrytown Light Station, August 1930), newspaper obituaries. The pieces of documentation vary anywhere from orders, letters, pay stubs, retirement, letters of commendation including efficiency star, as well as a few pieces of correspondence from the family and Coast Guard regarding his records and years of service, etc. John A. Brown was a Keeper at Sakonnet Light Station in Rhode Island (1st assistant, 1914-1916, keeper 1916-1918) and Tarrytown Light in New York (c.1919 – 1930’s). Items overall are in very good or better condition and provide an unprecedented look at the career of Keeper Brown. Research reveals that Keeper John A. Brown, keeper of Tarrytown Lighthouse during the 1920s, was recognized for rescuing several people in distress near the lighthouse. In 1922, he towed a leaking skiff, loaded with three ladies, a man, and a child, to the station and repaired the boat. On June 28, 1925, Brown rescued two men from drowning, and on June 29, 1929, he went to the aid of the cruiser Tink, which had become disabled near the rocks at Kingsland Point. For a partial list of the documents included please ask. Lot 70 pieces. (VG+). $1,795.
