13108d-j. (lot 7 photos) American Steamer Onondaga Stranded on Nauset Beach, Chatham c.1907. On January 13, 1907 the American Steamer Onondaga, bound from Boston to Jacksonville, Florida, stranded on Nauset Beach in Chatham in dense fog. Life-Savers from the Old Harbor Station responded and hauled out the breeches buoy, but as the seas had calmed none of the crew were landed at that time. The vessel remained for three months when in March the steamer was refloated, with the aid of tugboats. In order to pull the steamer from the beach, she had to be lightened and unloaded by hand. In these close views we can see the ship being unloaded, as well as horse teams clearing sand from beneath the ship, attempts to pull the ship off the beach, and more. Most clear, some edge wear and light soiling, a few marks, some on postcard paper, up to 3 ½” x 5 ¼”. (VG-). Lot 7 photos $236.
