1323. Hough, Henry Beetle. Martha’s Vineyard – Summer Resort 1835-1935. Tuttle. 1936.

1323. Hough, Henry Beetle. Martha’s Vineyard – Summer Resort 1835-1935. Tuttle. 1936. 276p. Gilt embossed blue cloth wraps. Remains of the DJ clipped neatly and laid into the book. Signed and inscribed by the author on the FFEP. Charming book, thoroughly presents a behind the scene look at summer life on Martha’s Vineyard. The reader is taken back to the day of the first summer visitors, and the events of the past hundred years are told in a history with all of the qualities of a novel. The narrative tells how the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting became the greatest gathering of its kind, Vineyard sea captains and forty-niners are examined, regional areas such as Innisfail, Makonikey, West Chop and Katama are treated in detail, the lighting of Gay Head Lighthouse is described, the story of the Katama fox hunts, the burning of the Sea View Hotel, the whole panorama of summer recreation is examined, and much, much more. Quite a nice early work. Text is clean, binding tight and solid, boards clean with only light wear. (VG). $88.
