3113h. Gardner, Arthur H., WRECKS AROUND NANTUCKET 1664-1915. Inquirer And Mirror Press, Nantucket. 1915. 149p. Well illustrated with 15 vintage photographs and fold-out chart of Nantucket and surrounding shoals. Situated some 20 miles south of Cape Cod amidst numerous dreaded shoals, Nantucket has always been the scene of numerous shipwrecks as vessels make their way through the area. This important reference chronicles a 253 year period, detailing most of the major shipwrecks. Many of these disasters called forth deeds of daring and heroism by Nantucket boatmen and Life-Savers, much of which is related herein. First published in 1876 but limited to only 500 copies, Wrecks Around Nantucket 1664-1915 serves to fill in the gaps during the period of the institution of the Life-Saving Service and the construction of three life-saving stations here. Most interesting reading and an invaluable reference – extremely difficult to find. Some occasional light foxing, otherwise quite clean and tight, an excellent copy. (VG+). $155.
