8194i. [framed calendar / engraving] A WRECK OFF HIGHLAND LIGHT, CAPE COD, MASS. c.1896 by New England Mutual Life Insurance Company. Exceptional early complete calendar and engraving depicting the Massachusetts Humane Society life-savers rowing to vessel in distress through heavy seas. In the background Highland Lighthouse can be seen atop the clay pounds of North Truro. Engraving measures 6” h x 10”w and is extremely detailed, down to the lettering “Mass. Humane Society” on the surfboat. Complete calendar for 1896 measures 13” x 15 ½” and is framed in a mid-20th Century wood frame. Printing / engraving is by American Banknote Company, NY & Boston. This is the only such view that I have found depicting these little-known life-savers and this is a striking piece. This is the perfect companion piece to hang in your life saving station or on your wall. Similar pieces surely were hung in life saving stations years ago. Condition is good, except for some old moisture stains at lower left (probably from being kept for years in an attic) and some small light foxing, light soiling, and some surface abrasions / scratches that must have happened in the early years of its use before it was put into a frame a long time ago. The overall size, including the frame is 16” x 13 ¼”. Will be a striking piece when re-matted and framed. (VG-). $138.
