Florence Kern – The First Revenue Cutter booklets
Florence Kern
Florence Kern worked in the office of the Coast Guard Historian for a number of years, researching and writing on the many facets of the Coast Guard’s illustrious history. Mrs. Kern is a foremost scholar of the early years of the Revenue Cutter Service. During her tenure there, Mrs. Kern wrote a number of books and pamphlets, many of which we have been fortunate to find and offer below. This is an unprecedented opportunity to obtain a great number of her works.
The First Revenue Cutters
Drawing on years of research, Ms. Kern presents individual volumes on the small armed schooners and sloops that first established American law on the Atlantic coast. Called a “system of cutters” in 1790, the service became the United States Revenue Marine. Each pamphlet presents a detailed history on a particular cutter, its authorization and construction, its battles and its masters. There has been surprisingly little written about America’s first ten revenue cutters authorized by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. They were the first to fly the American flag officially at sea. These are the story of these famous vessels. All as new.
