4416-2. FLARE CANISTER FOR LIFEBOATS with FLARE. c.1930-1940’s. Rare heavy galvanized steel flare canister, complete with 1 Coston wooden handled flare, designed to be used on ship’s lifeboats. Label is well worn – unable to determine manufacturer but probably 1930’s – 1940’s vintage. Well made canister measures 12” high by 6” in diameter and is complete with a cast screw-on top. Inside is an original, wooden handled Coston Friction Ship Distress Signals. Beautiful wooden handled Coston’s flare is complete and intact with original waxed paper wrapping, designed to be used for signaling and on ship’s lifeboats. Paper label reads: “COSTON FRICTION SHIP SIGNAL. Coston Signal Company, Inc. 50 Water Street, New York.” These wooden handled Coston Friction Ship and Marine Distress Signals are now most difficult to find. The Coston Company is famous for providing similar signals and flares to the Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service and others since the 1860’s and continued well into the 20th Century. Canister is in good condition with no dents, all seams are intact and untouched. Can will enhance any display. It is most difficult to find these flare canisters and Coston flares intact. (VG+). $124.
