16192. (photo) Crew of Coast Guard Cutter Bear Read Newspapers on their Return from Arctic c.1925. For more than forty-two years the U. S. Revenue Cutter Bear patrolled the waters of the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean and became celebrated for many dramatic rescues of trapped whalers. Here, in 1925, members of the crew read their first newspaper in months upon their arrival in San Francisco. In early 1930’s Admiral Byrd purchased the Bear for $1050, refitting her for an Antarctic expedition. Photo measures 6 ½” x 8 ½”. Light wear, clipped corner. Date and description on back. Dated May 6, 1925. (VG). $34.
