C15131. U. S. Department of Commerce and Labor, Light-House Establishment. Description and Inventory of Light-Vessel No. 85 Stationed at Nantucket Shoals c.1913. 36 pages. During the heyday of maritime travel, twelve lightships stood guard over the waters around Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod – more than any other location in the world, and the Nantucket Shoals station was one of the most dangerous. Original inventory booklet was signed in hand by Master David B. Stridley. Dated December 19, 1913. Lengthy form includes complete description of the light vessel and equipment on board. In addition form contains spaces for all items needed on board, and is filled out in the Master’s hand indicating the quantity of each item on hand, received, and used during the year. Each and every possible item is noted, from all sizes of brushes, to boats, burners, lamps, wicks, tools, deflectors, furniture, dinnerware, lamp fittings, paint, books and forms, and much more. Listing covers 36 pages and is a must for researchers working to understand the equipment used on board these important vessels. Extremely rare. (Photocopy $8.50)
