23117. [Light-House Service] SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE SINGLE-SCREW, STEEL, DIESEL-PROPELLED SECOND-CLASS LIGHTSHIP “No. 118”. Wash. 1936. 96 p. Complete specifications for the construction of the Second Class Light-Vessel No. 118. Specifications detail all manner of construction and equipment of this beautiful vessels, from keel and frame, masts, lights, pumps, lantern houses, day marks, boats, ballast, sails, painting and more. LV-118 Was constructed in 1936 by Rice Brothers in East Boothbay, Maine for a cost of $223,900. She served on Cornfield Point from 1938 to 1957, Cross Rip from 1958 to 1962, and on Boston from 1962 until 1972 when she was retired. Presently she is on display in Lewes, Delawars and marked “Overfalls”, though she was never assigned to that station. Excellent for research, most interesting reading. (Spiral bound facsimile. $21)

Lengthy form contains spaces for all items needed by the Keeper and is would be filled out in his hand indicating the quantity of each item on hand, received, and used during the year. Each and every possible item is noted, from all sizes of brushes, to boats, burners, lamps, wicks, tools, deflectors, furniture, dinnerware, lamp fittings, paint, books and forms, and much more. Listing covers 24 pages and is a must for researchers working to properly furnish your lighthouse or museum exhibit. Quality photocopy, spiral bound. $8.

Brief 4-page report details the operation of the Board during the previous year. Noted are appropriations for the Service and the progress of various projects, new funding needed, changes in the members of the Light-House Board. Good early information. (Photocopy $1).

4373. H.R. Doc. No. 183. EXAMINATION-LIGHT-HOUSE ESTABLISHMENT. February 25, 1843 . 301 pp. A report from I.W.P. Lewis, civil engineer, upon the condition of the light-houses, beacons, buoys, and navigation, upon the coasts of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Offers an exceptionally complete report on the condition and equipment at each station, repairs and suggestions. Includes a multi page schedule- “Catalogue of Lights on the Coast of Maine , New Hampshire , and Massachusetts…” Also, reports on 69 separate lighthouses on the coasts of Maine , New Hampshire , and Massachusetts . Some with identified construction dates as early as 1795 and a few with unknown earlier dates. Includes detailed descriptions and the method of construction of the lighthouses, dwelling houses and lanterns; many have narratives by the lighthouse keeper concerning the condition of the lighthouse or dwelling house. Also included is a schedule showing the cost of maintenance and repairs, dimensions of lights. Includes a list of lighthouses that “have fallen down or been rebuilt. Also annexed is a 79 pp report of defects in equipment and expenditures relating to the Establishment, taken as testimony Sept. 8, 1842 . Very complete, worthwhile reference. (Photocopy $39).

Lists the status of many of the lights and beacons in the country, new stations under construction with progress reports, a complete listing of repairs in progress, as well as a lengthy listing of all lighthouses and aids to navigation in progress in the country with appropriation and progress made, and much more. Includes Rules for the Light-House Board, Districts, Instructions for Light-Keepers in Stations with Two or More Keepers, Light Stations With One Keeper, Keepers of Light-Vessels, Management of Lens Lights and Disposition of Lamps and Illuminating Apparatus, Management of Mechanical Lamps, Revolving Machinery, etc. Includes all aspects of station and apparatus maintenance. C-562. REPORT OF THE OFFICERS CONSTITUTING THE LIGHT-HOUSE BOARD…TO INQUIRE INTO THE CONDITIONS OF THE LIGHT-HOUSE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE UNITED STATES, UNDER THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1851 . Senate Ex. Doc. No. 28. Wash. 1852. 760 pages. 44 large fold-out plates. In two volumes, spiral bound. THIS IS A VERY SIGNIFICANT REPORT OF THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE CONDITIONS OF THE LIGHT-HOUSES of the United States , criticizing the equipment, personnel as well as the general operation of the Service. This report became the basis for the complete re-organization of the Light-House service and was the basis for the permanent establishment of the “Light-House Board” later in the year. This volume is certainly the most complete reference on the state of US Lighthouses at the time and contains superb information on the status of various light stations, illuminating apparatus and fuels, research and experiments in progress, personnel practices as well as information on foreign apparatus for comparison. 44 large fold-out plates include lamps and burners, lens apparatus, lanterns, light vessels and much more. In original brown cloth government binding, professionally repaired with new hinges and endpapers. With original gilt embossed spine “Report on Light Houses 1852”. Moderate staining and foxing as expected. This is surely the one most significant Light House Establishment report. (facsimile spiral bound) $128 net.

This is the First Annual Report of the newly formed Light-house Board (Aug. 1852). Lists the status of many of the lights as well as many of the reforms planned. Provides a listing of laws of the United States relating to light-houses, as well as a copy of THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIGHT-KEEPERS OF THE UNITED STATES, rules and regulations. (Photocopy $21).

Lists the status of many of the lights and beacons in the country, new stations under construction, repairs in progress, as well as two complete listing of all lighthouses and aids to navigation in the country as of 1851, and as of 1858, with complete descriptive information on each, and much more. A very complete and important early, complete document. Contained within Report of the Secretary of the Treasury, Finance Report 1858. Scarce Civil War report detailing construction, repairs, new lights established and the overall condition of the Establishment. Includes a great deal of interesting details of damage to light stations by the “enemy” [Confederates] with guards stationed at some stations for protection, etc. Also details inspections of the Great Lakes for placement of lights, and more. Lighthouse Service Bulletins were issued monthly updating keepers and personnel on new technology and equipment, new construction, changes in personnel, fires and other disasters, punishments to keepers and personnel, lightships damages or driven off station, lives saved, and much more. Long sought after, these are made from the firstfull set that I have ever been able to find. These are probably the most informative look into the condition and day to day operations of the Lighthouse Service that I have yet found. The original issues measured 5 ½” x 9” and were 4 pages each, for a total of 1152 original pages of information. Our set reproduces these in four volumes of about 151 pages each.
