8486d. (souvenir sugar) Cape Cod Lighthouse, Highlands of Cape Cod, North Truro, Mass. c.1900. Lovely off white covered sugar measures 3 ¾” high, with delicate handles on the sides. Featured is a lovely hand painted full color image of Cape Cod’s Highland Light House, North Truro, Mass.  Backmarked “Made in Germany” “Made for I.M. Small No. Truro, Mass.”.

Isaac Small was for sixty years the marine reporting agent stationed at Highland Light, whose duty it was to report incoming shipping. His experience and knowledge of this area of Cape Cod provide a solid background for this history of these prominent wrecks of the area. Born in Highland Village, North Truro in 1845, Mr. Small’s father was the Keeper at Highland Light, where he grew up. After graduating from school in 1863 he took charge of the Telegraph office at the light. Small pursued a number of endeavors to make extra funds including writing books on the history of the lighthouse, and he set up a small souvenir store to sell items such as this to the tourists visiting the lighthouse. This piece was indeed sold by him over 125 years ago at the lighthouse.

Clean, no cracks or checks, only light wear around the rim. A very detailed, pretty little item for your display, unusually attractive coloration. (VG+). $78
