7197eee. [newspaper] U. S. Steamer Myrtle…. The Portland Transcript. June 15, 1887. Short article notes that the U. S. Steamer [Lighthouse Tender] Myrtle recently loaded timbers at Portland for the erection of three new bell towers at lighthouses along the coast of Maine. The towers are intended for Saddleback Rock, Mount Desert Rock and the third at Half-way Rock stations. Some construction details are noted, as well as a mention that before the tower now under construction on Bear Island, it was the custom of the lightkeeper there to ring a hand bell when steamers were approaching. Full newspaper contains four pages with articles of the day, only light browning, 4 folds. (VG). $14
