- (large fold out plates) [from] Jenkins, Lieut. Thornton A. and Richard Bache. A REPORT RELATIVE TO THE LIGHT-HOUSE SYSTEM OF THE UNITED STATES. [H. R. Doc. No. 222]. August 6, 1846. 278p. with 27 large fold-out plates. This important early report presents the results of a trip by Lieut. Thornton A Jenkins and Richard Bache to the coasts of England, Ireland, Scotland and France for the purpose of studying their improved lighthouses and lighting apparatus with an eye on making similar improvements to the lighthouse “system” of the United States. In this extensive report, the authors present in great detail the lighthouse systems of the various countries, construction of lighthouses, lighting apparatus and all manor of associated information. Also included are these plates from the 27 large fold-out plates detailing lighthouse structures, dioptric and lenticular apparatus, lanterns, burners, lamps and other details. This was a most detailed report and served to begin the investigations that would later result in the complete revamping of the light-house “system” of the united States. These large plates measure from 5 ½” x 8” to 21” x 27”and are fairly clean, may be some toning or light soiling, with original folds. A rare opportunity to get these 178- year old plans for research of to be framed for your wall.
