- (Flight jacket) Coast Guard CWU COLD WEATHER FLYERS’ JACKET MIL-J-83388D Size 42-44.
The CWU is probably one of the most practical flight jackets ever design. This is a Coast Guard lightly used example of a 1980’s pattern for the Cold Weather Flyers’ Jacket; the MIL-J-83388D. It was established by the Department of Defense on September 5, 1973. This model was adopted as the successor to the MA-1 and WEP jackets for USAF and USN pilots respectively. It became their main cold protection flight jacket, and since it was given the name of CWU-45/P later in 1977, it has undergone several spec revisions until present.
Based on the bitter experience of the Vietnam War, this is an intermediate flight jacket that uses flame-resistant fiber; Aromatic Polyamide (Aramid) for the first time. Quilting is used for the internal lining for heat retention.
It originally included an inner pocket with velcro closure that comes with an Indian Orange rescue panel – not present.
The condition of this example is very good, lightly worn, some pilling to lining, which is rare considering it is almost 50 years old. Serval zippers are working perfectly, and still retain much of their black paint. This jacket is extremely comfortable and practical, which is the reason it has been in use for almost 5 decades. Also includes: 100% nylon water repellent outer shell, zippered utility pocket on left sleeve with pencil pockets, two front slash pockets, front zipper closure with storm flaps protect against the elements.
Originally issued to H. Connors, USCG Ret. Size 42-44. (VG+) $79.
