34043. (photo on matt board) Grosse Point Light Station, Evanston, Illinois c.1900. Wonderful early view of the historic Grosse Point Lighthouse in Evanston, Illinois. Following several shipping disasters near Evanston, residents successfully lobbied the federal government for a lighthouse. Construction was completed in 1873. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 8, 1976. Today it is maintained under the jurisdiction of the Evanston Lighthouse Park District, an independent taxing authority. Wonderful early view shows the light tower from the beach, as well as the two large fog signal diaphone horns and brick steam boiler buildings. This is a rare view as these buildings are rarely seen in photos. Photo is overall quite clear and sharp and measure 3 ¾” x 4 ¾” on black matt board. (VG+). $79.

33027b,c. (photos on matt board) U.S. Life-Saving Service Station, Evanston, Illinois c.1900. Wonderful early views of the one-of-a-kind station designed by J.L. Parkinson in 1876-77 with some of the crew posing on the porch and the boat-room interior. The U.S. Life Saving Station was located at Evanston, 12 miles north of Chicago, on Lake Michigan shore, on the Northwestern University Campus, and the crew, (excepting the Captain), was composed of students of the Northwestern University. The crew saved over 264 lives since their unit was established. Photos are overall quite clear and sharp and measure 3 ¾” x 4 ¾”  on black matt board. Views include the back of the station and large drill pole, also the interior of the boat-room with surfboat, beach apparatus cart and Francis Metallic Lifeboat hanging from ceiling. On the backs are two additional photos of the Dearborn Observatory at the University. Includes 8 additional photos of beach scenes in the area. This lot is part of a Chicago family’s group of vacation (?) photos during the late 1800’s & early 1900’s. Clean, crisp, nice lot. (VG+). $185.
