  1. (photo) Men Work Pulling Boat (Life Saving / Fishing) c.1906. Close photo provides a great view of what may be an early square-stern life-saving boat or fishing craft. Life-saving historian Timothy Dring notes that: “The boat in the photo you sent is a so-called “pound boat”, which was a type of square-stern pulling surfboat used by the pound fisheries along the NJ and DE/MD coasts back in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. The hull of a pound boat was much fuller and deeper than that for a USLSS Jersey type surfboat because it had to be able to carry the cargo of fish to shore through beach surf from the pound nets that were usually located around the vicinity of the first or second sandbar offshore. By the early 1900’s, most of the pound boats were motorized. Nearly all of the pound fisheries in NJ were depleted and closed by WWII. Many of the period photos of NJ area life-saving stations also show the pound fishery boats, which can be confusing for those who are not familiar with details of the pound boat designs.” Photo itself is clear and close. Great early detail, on postcard paper. Dated 1906 New York, Private Mailing Card. Only very light toning, otherwise superb image. 3 ½” x 5 ½”. (VG+). $48.
