34004. (Stereoview) Long Island Head Lighthouse, Boston Harbor c.1870

  1. (Stereoview) Long Island Head Lighthouse, Boston Harbor c.1870 by G.W. Tirrell 2nd. Superb original stereoview by G. W. Tirrell 2nd provides a clear, close view of the second lighthouse at Long Island Head in Boston Harbor. The light was used as a range light – when a sea captain brought Boston Narrows (Bug Light) in range with Long Island Head Light, he knew that he was clear of Harding’s Ledge and could safely enter the harbor. This new cast-iron tower was built in 1844 and lasted until 1881 when a more modern cast iron tower and lantern were constructed. Note too the government wind vane. Written after 1900 on verso is: “Long Island Head Light, Boston Harbor, Mass., Lighthouse District #2 established 1820 and here shown as an iron tower 27 ft. high.  Rebuilt in 1900 as a white, brick tower, 52 ft. high and 120 feet above high water” and stamped “Gift of W.S. Appleton, 28 Feb., 1926”. View is clear and clean, just very light wear to mount edges. There is light foxing throughout but does not unduly affect the image or rare Tirrell label on reverse. Great view of this rare early style of cast iron tower. (VG). $124.
