33160a. (cabinet photo) Ruins of Chatham Early Lighthouse and Keeper’s Dwelling c.1887. Shown here are the remains of one of the old 1840’s brick light towers and the keeper’s house, perched on the edge of the sand cliff. Captain Hardy, keeper at Chatham in the 1870’s, carefully recorded the erosion of the cliff. In 1870, the lights were 228 feet from the bluff, but by 1874, the distance was 190 feet. By 1876 a mere 95 feet remained, and soon they toppled over the edge. This is a wonderful large, clear close view measuring 8” x 5”. Notations on back in ink include: “Ruins of keeper’s house and one light 1887.” And “I am the small girl with a white apron sitting next to Vinnie Kalevlin in a white dress.” Some light wear to corners and one edge. Rare early detailed view. (VG+). $145.

33160b. (cabinet photo) Inlet at Chatham, Early Lighthouse and Keeper’s Dwelling c.1887. Shown here is the inlet at Chatham at about 1887 or so. Included are the remains of one of the old 1840’s brick light towers and the keeper’s house, perched on the edge of the sand cliff. Also visible are the two later cast iron towers and keeper’s dwelling, as well as a few other homes and shacks on the bluff. In the foreground are a half-dozen or so small boats being rowed by finely dressed Victorian women out for a pleasant day on the bay. This is a wonderful large, clear close view measuring 8” x 5”. Notations on back in ink include: “Inlet at Chatham about 1888.” Only some very light wear to corners. Rare early detailed view. (VG+). $125.
