33144. (nautical chart) Imray Blueback Chart of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and New England 1888. “Coast of North America Between the Strait of Belle Island and Cape Cod. Published in London by James Imray & Son. 1888. 1:1584000. 41” x 74” on blue backing. From the eighteenth century, navigators relied on nautical charts produced by a handful of chart makers and instrument sellers who worked in the City of London. These privately produced charts, or bluebacks as they were known from the tough blue manilla paper on which they were mounted, were in circulation amongst the merchant fleets of the World until the Second World War. This remarkable and early chart covers the above area. Shown are lighthouses, buoys, towns and features and more. The area has numerous shoals and bars, hundreds of islands, and the entire area is exceedingly treacherous. Included on the chart are bearings, tides and currents for the area, and soundings, and more. Lights highlighted in yellow/red. Insets include: Port Basque, Scatari Island to Sydney Harbour, Strait of Belle Isle, Cod Roy, St Pierre, Trepasses, Bird Rocks, Halifax Harbour, Conception Bay, St Lunaire Bay, Red Bay, Gut of Canso, SW Coast of Newfoundland, Trerassey Bay, St John’s, Pictou Harbour, Seven Islands Bay, Cape Sable, Gaspe Bay, Elles Bay. Chart is in good condition, overall clean, light age toning, light edge wear, with two larger edge tears 8-12”, one in from each side, crudely tape reinforced. This is a rare chart that can be repaired and framed to make a striking piece. (VG-). $180.
