  1. Quinn, William P., SHIPWRECKS AROUND BOSTON – A Pictorial History of Maritime Disasters Along the Massachusetts Coast From Cape Ann to Plymouth. Parnassus. 1996. 230p. DJ. Illustrated with over 200 photographs. Noted news photographer Bill Quinn has been taking and collecting photographs of shipwrecks since he filmed the sinking of the Andrea Doria in 1956. For nearly half a century he has added to his remarkable archive, and his books represent some of the largest collections of shipwreck images in print. First published in 1996 and long out of print, Shipwrecks Around Boston is still sought after. The waters around Boston have claimed thousands of ships over the years. In this classic work, historian and author Bill Quinn features hundreds of photographs of schooners and square riggers that were wrecked or stranded, from the 1870’s to the 1980’s, during the Port of Boston’s Golden Age. Included are the loss of the steamer Portland with the loss of 175 passengers and crew, and the grounding of the zoo ship City of Salisbury with its cargo of wild animals. With detailed text, the author describes numerous wrecks and the work of the Life-Saving Service and Coast Guard over the years. Exceptional vintage photographs and riveting reading. (M). $45 .
