H. Marshall Gardiner was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1884. He first arrived in Nantucket in 1910 and immediately began chronicling the island’s beauty and landscape using the then -modern gelatin dry plate method of photography. Using large view cameras for the best clarity possible, Gardiner took literally thousands of exposures over the next thirty years, many of which ended up as the now highly collectible post cards. From the surviving cards, this collection records Nantucket Island as it was then and will never be again. His expertly hand-tinted photographs hang in private collections and in galleries across the country and his famous post cards exist in collections worldwide.
