- (printers’ block) U.S. Congressional Life Saving Medal c.1874-1900. Early wood plate letterpress print block was used for printing image in magazines or papers of the day. These plates were hand cut on wood block. Large image measures 1 ¾” x 2 ¼” and provides a beautifully detailed image of a U.S. Congressional Life Saving Medal. Perimeter border reads “United States of America, Act of Congress June 20, 1874.” In the center of the medal, one and seven-sixteenths inches in diameter, three men are depicted in a boat in a heavy sea. One of the men is rowing the boat while another is standing, preparing to throw a line. The third figure is reaching out to help a fourth figure, a mariner in distress, who is clinging to a spar. In the distance to the left is the wreck of a ship. The entire scene is contained within a raised border. Small scratch at the 1 o’clock position. Wonderful for your collection or for printing today.
