- Vintage War Department Commission letter signed by the Adjutant General appointing Lieutenant Charles A. Eaton, Revenue Cutter Service as Second Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps. October 8, 1909. This letter reads as follows: “War Department, The Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, October 8, 1909. Lieutenant Charles A. Eaton, Revenue Cutter Service, 62 Taylor Street, Waltham, Massachusetts. Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a commission, issued by the President during a recess of the Senate under section 2, Article II of the Constitution of the United States, evidencing your appointment as Second Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps, with rank from September 25, 1909. Please communicate to this office by telegraph without delay your acceptance or non-acceptance of this commission and, in case of acceptance, state the date and place of your birth, your legal residence at the time of appointment and your given name or names written out in full, also transmit with your letter of acceptance an oath of office, executed on the blank form that accompanies this communication. Very respectfully, (signed by the Adjutant General).” Document measures 8” x 10” with names filled in ink. (VG).
