[document] Very early US Lighthouse Establishment letter dated Treasury Department, Revenue Office, Washington DC Oct 30, 1818 from Samuel Smith, Commissioner of the Revenue, to David Gelston Esq., Superintendent of Light Houses, New York, NY on red Washington City DC stampless cover postmark, and Revenue Office/ Sam Smith free frank. In the 1 pp. letter Smith asks Gelston to place an advertisement (not present) in the New York newspapers, “… that have an extensive circulation in those districts where the oil dealers and manufacturers reside. When the period for receiving proposals at your office has elapsed, you will please to forward them to me, with your opinion on the qualifications of the respective parties, and I shall immediately thereupon take steps for having a contract concluded with the persons who make the most favorable offer …” Very good condition, only light browning at folds, some wear. Excellent penmanship makes this quite readable. An important early Light House Establishment document. $185 net.
