23409. Laurence, Frederick Sturgis. COASTING PASSAGE. Arlington. 1950

23409. Laurence, Frederick Sturgis. COASTING PASSAGE. Arlington . 1950. 43 p. Soft wraps. Numbered 225 of 500 copies. Sought after account of a trip on the schooner Sarah C. Ropes from Norfolk , Virginia to Portland , Maine in the summer of 1897. Now that these vessels are extinct, accurate reporting of their operations and their contribution to American commercial life takes on added historical significance. The Sarah C. Ropes was Captain William R. Kreger’s third vessel. While in command of the Ropes, the captain met and survived the ill-famed “Portland Storm” of November 1898, losing several members of his crew and all the spars except the foremast, yet succeeding nevertheless in making port without assistance some thirty days later. Excellent first hand account of life aboard ship in the latter days of sail. Clean, tight, nice copy of rare title. (VG). $88. Closeout 50% off
