23252t. U. S. Coast Guard Petty Officer hat. c.1940’s.

23252t. U. S. Coast Guard Petty Officer hat. c.1940’s. White cotton type cap with black mohair over-band and hat device with vertical gilt fouled anchor with intertwined early twisted wire “chain” surmounted by shield. 1 ¾” high. Described in Coast Guard Uniform Regulations in the 1930’s as: “White above band of lustrous black mohair braid 1 ¼” wide; visor of patent leather; bound with same … chin strap of black patent leather one-half inch wide, with leather slides, fastened at sides with two small Coast Guard buttons. The crown to be from 1 inch to 1 ¼ inches greater in diameter than the band and to be stiffened….” Hat not labeled as to maker. Interior and band mostly intact, stiches failed on about 50% of circumference. Moderate darkening and soiling and expected wear to crown but overall quite a nice example of a scarce hat. Size not noted. Extremely scarce, worth it for the insignia alone. (VG-).  $295.
