This book is well written by noted North Carolina Historian David Stick and is beautifully illustrated with many historical photos of the Outer Banks and Dare County. Stick does a wonderful job and has managed to put a lot in a small amount of space, including historical photographs of the First Flight of the Wright Brothers and the ever popular Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Chapters include The Roanoke Colonies, Sidelights on the Lost Colony, The Province of Carolina, The Colonial Period, The Revolution, Early Life on the Outer Banks, The Civil War, The Lifesavers, The Formation of Dare County, Place Names, and Post Offices, The Wright Brothers, Commercial Fisheries, Religion and Education, Roads and Bridges, Tourism, National Park Facilities, the conclusion and references for additional reading.
