21137. [newspaper] [Francis’s Metallic Life-Boats and Life-Car] LIFE-SAVING EFFORTS. National Intelligencer. January 10, 1854. Original newspaper with ¾ column article describing the recent exhibit on Wall Street of Francis’s Metallic life-boats and life-cars, completely fitted out, for the Life-Saving Station on Sable Island. Also included in the exhibit was a Straton life-boat and other apparatus for “throwing” a life line to a wreck. Includes a description of some of the boats in use in the United States, many of which were named [ the Grace Darling in Philadelphia, The Victoria in Boston, etc.] Includes a good description of much of the equipment, as well as details of a recent rescue by surf boat. Four pages [full issue?], clean, crisp save some light foxing. Extremely rare early account of the work and equipment of Joseph Francis. (G+). $26.
