Wonderful collection of District Circular Letters issued by Commissioner Putnam, and later by Superintendents Park and Sherman offering a wonderful insight into the day to day operations of the Lighthouse Service and into the bureaucracy that prevails in Government offices. Subjects range from the economical use of paper [a gem in itself], vaccinations for crews of light vessels, mine planting by Lighthouse Tenders during the First World War, flag regulations, lighthouse tender equipment, uniform regulations, erosion at light stations, use of boats at light stations, squatters on lighthouse reservations, radio operation, care and painting of buoys, leave on lightships, and much more.
