Clear, close b/w photo provides detailed view of this first of five electrically driven, 250-foot “Lake Class” cutters launched in the1920’s. Captain Q.B. Newman, USCG, designed its innovative turbine-electric-drive power plant, which developed an amazing 3,350 shp. These were the first to have alternating current, and a synchronous motor for propulsion. The Chelan was first stationed in Seattle and then transferred to Boston in 1937. She was assigned to International Ice Patrol in 1940, and during World War II lent to the Royal Navy. She was returned in 1946 and sold the following year. Rare view of this important vessel, measures 5 ½” x 6 ½”. Dated December 12, 1928. Includes description on back. (VG). $24.
