4342a. Otis, James. THE LIFE SAVERS. A Story of the United States Life-Saving Service. New York. 1899. 1st. 327 p. Nicely illustrated with official photographs. Beautiful gilt embossed cover scene of life-savers launching their surfboat. With top page edges gilded. Relates the history of the Life-Saving Service and the work of the U.S. Life-Savers through various chapters in this fictional account. Though probably intended for a teenage audience, this is by far one of the best early day-to-day accounts. Based on fact. Quite scarce. With laid in note given as Christmas gift in 1904. Nearly pristine, clean, tight in bright wrap, as nice as I have ever found. A beautiful copy. (F). $78.
