On June 6, 1900 an act was approved appropriating $15,000 for changing the characteristic of the first-order light at Cape Cod Light from fixed to flashing white. This was accomplished by installing a new 1st. order lens in September and October of 1901 and the first light was exhibited on October 10th. During the installation, a third-order flashing light was exhibited from a temporary wood skeleton tower erected beside the main tower. The temporary tower was later sold at auction and the temporary lens returned to the Light-House Depot.
Recently we were fortunate to find a wonderful collection of original photographs taken during this replacement work. These exceptionally rare photographs show in detail the temporary tower and light, and the workers working to install the new lens apparatus.
We have had these photographs re-photographed and are able to offer a set of four 8” x 10” b/w prints from the series as follows:
- Close view of the upper portions of both light towers, with good detail of the two lanterns, construction of the temporary tower, and of the gin-poles for hoisting equipment. Clear, just slightly grainy.
- Workers on the ground hauling on ropes to hoist the lens sections up to the tower. Clear, crisp view.
- Four workers pose within the 1st. Order lantern, holding a lens section. The ocean is visible through the lantern panes beyond. Somewhat grainy, sun obscures one worker’s face.
- Nice posed view of the 12 workers, along with two of the Keepers, in the ell of the dwelling and brick walkway. Clear, crisp view.
Lot of 4 8” x 10” copy photos $68.
