These were the Christmas Seals which decorated the holiday mail in December of 1941, as the implications of the attack on Pearl Harbor were being discussed throughout the country. The prospect of another World War, combined with the absence of family members serving in the armed forces, gave a new significance to the peaceful, reassuring glow of the lighthouse shown in this winter lighthouse scene.
