2055. Skelton, Joan. RESCUE FROM GRAMPA WOO. Natural heritage Books, Toronto. 1998
- Skelton, Joan. RESCUE FROM GRAMPA WOO. Natural heritage Books, Toronto. 1998. 190p. Soft Wraps. Illustrated with over 60 color and b/w photographs. Rescue from Grampa Woo is an exciting account of heroism on Lake Superior. On the night of October 30th, 1996, the winds on Lake Superior continued to build to hurricane force sending towering black seas at all who dared that night. Aboard the Grampa Woo, the two Americans stood by their propellerless ship as it drifts out to sea in a full gale after snapping her towline. Three ships, two Canadian and one American fought to save the men on board and would win three Governor General’s Medals of Bravery. This is a most unusual account of the bravery and the fight to win against the sea. Also most interesting is the critical roll played by the Canadian Coast Guard’s 44-foot self-righting SAR vessel, crewed by Crewman Willie Trognitz, Chief Coxswain Bob King, and Crewman Inga Thorsteinson. The descriptions of their efforts in towering seas to find the stricken vessel and bring the stranded crew, as well as their own vessel home safely, are extraordinary. Well illustrated, with detailed notes and bibliography. (M). Published at $24.95. Our price $22.45.
