24371. Stone, T. N. M.D., CAPE COD RHYMES. Cambridge: Riverside Press,1869

  1. Stone, T. N. M.D., CAPE COD RHYMES. Cambridge: Riverside Press,1869. First Edition. 217 p. Very Scarce. A solid copy of this scarce book of poetry about Cape Cod. Probably only a small number of copies were printed and it has never been republished. Dr Thomas Newcomb Stone, American physician-poet of the last century, is best known for this book of Cape Cod poetry. Born in Wellfleet, he was one of a number of physicians in his family. On Cape Cod Rhymes, he includes 24 poems of varied length on the subjects of nautical, Cape Cod and local color. He notes in his preface: “These rhymes have been written in the few short intervals of labor allowed to a physician. They are the children of occasion and circumstance, to whom I stand godfather.… To the lovers of Cape Cod I commend them, as rude songs that my waken in them sweeter memories than ever yet found utterance, and thus they may read over again the unwritten poems of childhood, and bring back the days when, in life’s early morning, even Cape Cod was beautiful. If the reader would understand the locality of the bridge which was the occasion of the rhyme called ‘Neptune’s Vow.’ let him take Walling’s map of Cape Cod, and he will see running off from the bay shore of Truro, a long low point called Beach Point, reaching almost to the main – land of Provincetown. Octavo-sized hardcover book, original brown cloth binding with beveled edges; gilt lettering and gilt design on front board. With wear to edges and corners, and some rubbing to boards; hinges intact but worn, some occasional foxing. Some ownership notations on frontis including a Nancy B. Stone. With 4 page bibliography by Massachusetts Medical Society tipped in. A good copy of this very scarce book, published 135 years ago and never reprinted. (G+). $78 net.
