2160. Jones, Dorothy Holder and Ruth Sexton Sargent. ABBIE BURGESS – Lighthouse Heroine. New York. 1969

  1. Jones, Dorothy Holder and Ruth Sexton Sargent. ABBIE BURGESS – Lighthouse Heroine. New York. 1969. 190p. Soft wraps. Signed by the author. Abbie Burgess was only fourteen when she first stepped upon Matinicus Rocks off the coast of Maine. In 1853 her father had been appointed light keeper there and the family accompanied him to his post. Since her mother was not well, Abbie was counted on to take care of the household and her four little sisters and brother, and to help tend the whale-oil lamps in the twin light towers. Accounts of her bravery have been related a number of times and her name has become a legend, but this is one of the first books devoted to her early years on Matinicus Rock. Clean, crisp, tight, nice copy. (VG+). $18.
