4373. H.R. Doc. No. 183. EXAMINATION-LIGHT-HOUSE ESTABLISHMENT. February 25, 1843 . 301 pp. A report from I.W.P. Lewis, civil engineer, upon the condition of the light-houses, beacons, buoys, and navigation, upon the coasts of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Offers an exceptionally complete report on the condition and equipment at each station, repairs and suggestions. Includes a multi page schedule- “Catalogue of Lights on the Coast of Maine , New Hampshire , and Massachusetts…” Also, reports on 69 separate lighthouses on the coasts of Maine , New Hampshire , and Massachusetts . Some with identified construction dates as early as 1795 and a few with unknown earlier dates. Includes detailed descriptions and the method of construction of the lighthouses, dwelling houses and lanterns; many have narratives by the lighthouse keeper concerning the condition of the lighthouse or dwelling house. Also included is a schedule showing the cost of maintenance and repairs, dimensions of lights. Includes a list of lighthouses that “have fallen down or been rebuilt. Also annexed is a 79 pp report of defects in equipment and expenditures relating to the Establishment, taken as testimony Sept. 8, 1842 . Very complete, worthwhile reference. (Photocopy $39).
