27134d. U. S. Life Saving Service Friction Primer from Cahoon Hollow Life Saving Station, Cape Cod c.1900. This entire friction priming mechanism consist of a small brass tube (3/16 inch), once filled with a flash powder that would be ignited by sparks from a friction-sensitive compound activated by a sharp tug on a serrated friction pin which passed through the upper part of the tube. The method had become the standard means of firing muzzle-loaded ordnance about a century before. Shown in the diagram is the friction primer pin inserted into the primer tube for your information. Available is the friction tube only, used, found in sand near the station. (VG). $74.
