13239. (signed document) Light-House Board. Appointment of Keeper Upper Cedar Point Light House, Virginia c.1867. Signed in hand by Rear Admiral [ret] William B. Shubrick, Chairman, Light-House Board. Dated July 17, 1867. Rare form letter, filled out and signed in hand by Light-House Board Chairman William B. Shubrick, appoints Mr. James Treakle as first keeper at the light-house at Upper Cedar Point, Virginia. Lengthy one page form letter indicated that the oath of office must be taken and indicates what duties the new keeper must perform upon arriving at the light station. (Note. There was a “James C. Treakle” listed in the US/CS rosters as being in the 25th Virginia Militia during the Civil War. No other Treakles are listed – this may be the same person.) Upper Cedar Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1867 as a square screwpile lighthouse, located 2 miles west of Mathias Point on the Potomac River. The light station was deactivated in 1876 when Mathias Point Shoal light was constructed but, after numerous complaints, the light was reactivated in 1882 and remained operational until 1963. Document measures 6 ¾” x 9 ¼” and is clean and strong save one light stain. This rare document of Light-House Board Chairman Shubrick would be perfect framed. (VG). $245.
